diaminopimelic acid

An amino acid found in bacteria and blue-green algae. It is involved in the biosynthesis of lysine in such organisms. It is also often found in the peptide side chains of the acetylmuramic acid molecules that partly make up the mucopeptides of bacterial cell walls.
