denitrification

The loss of nitrate from the soil through the action of various denitrifying bacteria (e.g. species of Clostridium, Pseudomonas, Micrococcus, and Thiobacillus), which use nitrate as the terminal electron acceptor during anaerobic respiration. Molecular nitrogen, nitrous oxide, or ammonia may be given off. See nitrogen cycle.
