definitive nucleus

The diploid nucleus found in the centre of the *embryo sac after the fusion of the two haploid *polar nuclei. A male gamete released from the pollen tube may fuse with this to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus from which the endosperm develops. See also double fertilization.
