dedifferentiation

The loss of the specialized features and reversal to a meristematic state of a differentiated cell. Dedifferentiation often occurs immediately prior to further reorganizational changes as in the production of a secondary meristem. The process may also be brought about by wounding or stimulation by growth substances. It is thought to involve the removal of inhibitors that normally prevent the expression of the complete genetic complement. See totipotency. See also callus.
