cystocarp

A swollen urn-shaped fruiting body found in some red algae, e.g. Polysiphonia. It forms following fertilization of a *carpogonium and contains the developing carpospores. The surrounding pseudoparenchymatous tissues develop from cells of the filament below the carpogonium.
