cutting

A detached portion of a living plant, such as a bud or leaf, that can produce a new daughter plant if grown in soil or in a suitable culture medium. Taking cuttings is a common horticultural practice for plant propagation. Often the cut end of a stem cutting is dipped into a rooting powder, which contains a natural or synthetic auxin that stimulates the rapid development of adventitious roots and the establishment of a new daughter plant.
