cryptogam

In early classifications, a plant whose method of reproduction is not immediately apparent, i.e. a plant in which the reproductive structures are not borne in conspicuous flowers or cones. Cryptogams thus included the algae, fungi, bryophytes, and most pteridophytes. Compare phanerogam.
