coumarin

A toxic white crystalline substance with the formula C9H602, found in certain plants, particularly in the testa or fruit where it inhibits germination. Only when it has been removed or destroyed, for example by exposure to light, will the seed germinate. It has a characteristic  smell  of  new-mown   hay and has been manufactured artificially for use in the perfume industry.
