constitutive enzyme

An enzyme that is always present in nearly constant amounts in a given cell. A constitutive enzyme is part of the permanent and basic machinery of a cell. The enzymes of glycolysis are examples of constitutive enzymes in nearly all organisms. Compare induced enzyme.
