cohesion theory

The currently accepted theory explaining the ascent of sap in the xylem. It postulates that the reduction in water potential in the leaf (due to an increase in the rate of evaporation) causes water to flow through the plant to replace the lost water. The column of water in the xylem can withstand considerable tension before breaking because of the very strong cohesive forces between the water molecules. See also cavitation.
