A type of branching diagram (dendrogram) representing the relationships between organisms as determined by cladistic methods. A cladogram may be regarded as showing the phylogenetic relationships of organisms, in which case it is effectively an evolutionary tree, or it may be seen as simply representing a pattern based on shared characteristics. In the first case, the points of branching are thought of as actual or hypothetical ancestral species, while in the second case (the position held by 'transformed' cladists), the points simply represent shared characteristics.
