Chlamydobacteriales

(filamentous iron bacteria) An order of colourless rod-shaped gram-negative bacteria that aggregate into filaments, which sometimes become branched. The filaments are surrounded by a sheath of organic material impregnated with ferric and manganese oxides. Such bacteria derive energy from oxidizing organic substrates. However they also oxidize ferrous compounds to ferric oxides and probably derive additional energy from these reactions.
