chalazogamy

A method of fertilization in seed plants in which the pollen tube does not reach the nucellus through the micropyle (porogamy) but grows or digests its way through the placenta and *chalaza instead. This may be observed in certain trees and shrubs, such as beech, elm, and hazel.
