cell membrane

(membrane) Any membrane surrounding either the protoplast or any of the organelles within the protoplasm. The term is frequently used as a synonym for the plasma membrane. All cell membranes have essentially the same structure (see plasma membrane) and their selective permeability controls the passage of molecules and ions within the cell, particularly into and out of organelles. This ensures that metabolic processes are segregated without preventing links between biochemical pathways.
