caruncle

A horny outgrowth near the hilum of a seed that is formed from the integuments. The warty outgrowth covering the hilum and micropyle of the seed of castor oil (Ricinus communis) is a caruncle. Carunculate seeds are also found in other genera of the Euphorbiaceae, e.g. Euphorbia and Jatropha. Compare aril.
