carbon cycle

The circulation of carbon between living organisms and the environment. Atmospheric carbon dioxide is fixed as carbohydrates during photosynthesis and animals obtain carbohydrates by eating green plants. Carbon dioxide is returned to the atmosphere by respiration and by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and peat.
