calyx

The collective term for the *sepals, constituting the outer whorl of the *perianth. It encloses and protects the other floral parts during their development. A calyx tube is formed when the lateral margins of the individual sepals fuse, as seen in the primrose (Primula vulgaris). Compare corolla.
