biosystematics

The study of variation and relationship in populations rather than individuals. The genetic and evolutionary nature of groups is assessed by the examination of cytology, comparative morphology, and ecology. Biosystematics is often described as the taxo-nomic application of genecology or, occasionally, as experimental taxonomy. See also systematics , taxonomy.
