biological clock

An internal timing mechanism possessed by some organisms and responsible for the periodic or cyclical triggering of certain physiological responses. Biological clocks are often controlled by growth substances. Examples include the occurrence of flowering when a particular day length is achieved and the breaking of dormancy when conditions become suitable for seedling development. See also circadian rhythm.
