A comparison of the molar quantities of one base to another base in DNA, or of one base pair with another base pair. The observation that the amount of adenine (A) always equals the amount of thymine (T) and similarly the amount of guanine (G) equals that of cytosine (C) provided one of the first indications that adenine always pairs with thymine and guanine with cytosine in the complementary polynucleotide chains. A comparison of base pair ratios, A + T:G + C, or percentage G + C of the total, shows a constant figure within a species but differences between species.
