backcross

A cross between an individual and one of its parents. If the organism is short lived this may not be a practical possibility, in which case the term refers to a cross between an individual and an organism genetically identical to one of its parents. A backcross performed to ascertain the genotype of an individual is termed a *test cross . See also backcrossing.
