autophagy

A process utilized by certain cells to digest worn out or superfluous cell organelles. An autophagic vacuole forms around a portion of cytoplasm containing one or more unwanted organelles. Hydrolytic enzymes are secreted into the vacuole by the surrounding cytoplasm and digestion occurs followed by the subsequent reabsorption of the breakdown products. See also autolysis.
