A fungal plant disease in which the characteristic symptoms are limited lesions, * necrosis , and * hypoplasia . Anthracnose diseases are generally caused by one of the * Melanconiales (e.g. Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, bean anthracnose; C. coffeanum, coffee anthracnose or coffee-berry disease; and Gloeosporium limetticola, lime anthracnose). The fungi causing anthracnose diseases produce numerous spores that are spread by rain. High humidity is required for infection and the diseases are most destructive when there is some water-soaking of tissues. Anthracnose diseases also produce symptoms, including scab, leaf-spots, and blight, that are not exclusive to the group.
