antheridium

The male sex organ of the lower plants. In the algae and fungi it is unicellular, whereas in the bryophytes and pteridophytes it may be multicellular and surrounded by a sterile jacket. It usually produces numerous small motile gametes. Compare oogonium , archegonium .
