androspore

A specialized zoospore produced in the Oedogoniales. It does not participate directly in the fertilization process but swims towards and attaches itself to a female filament. Here it germinates to form a microfilament, which in turn liberates spermatozoids from the upper disc-shaped cells (an-theridia). These then fertilize the female gamete.
