The determination of the amino acid sequence of a protein. The sequencing of homologous proteins from different species has been used as a method of determining phylo-genetic relationships. It is assumed that the number of differences in the sequence may be related to the length of time since the different species diverged from a common ancestor. Phylogenetic trees have been constructed from data on the sequences of cytochrome c and plastocyanin. These do not always correspond with information derived from other sources. See also DNA hybridization.
