alginic acid

A carbohydrate polymer consisting of D-mannuronic acid and L-glucuronic acid units. It is found principally in the cell walls of brown algae where it functions as an ion exchange agent. Alginic acid derivatives have commercial value: they are used in the making of fireproof and disposable fabrics, as emulsifying agents, in some types of surgical suture, and as stabilizers in food.
