A form of vegetative propagation often used to multiply greenhouse and indoor plants. A branch is stimulated to produce roots while still attached to the parent plant by making a shallow cut or removing a narrow ring of bark just below a bud. The cut is dusted with rooting powder containing synthetic auxins and kept open by inserting sphagnum moss. The whole area is then kept moist by wrapping the stem in moss and surrounding this with a plastic sleeve. Root formation is slow and may take up to two years.
