acid rain

Rain with a high level of acidity caused by pollution by oxides of nitrogen and sulphur produced by coal and oil combustion. The oxides combine with water in the atmosphere forming acids such as nitric and sulphuric acids. Acid rain has caused the deaths of countless living organisms both by producing a high level of acidity and by leaching metal ions from the soil into rivers and lakes. The disastrous effects have been extensively documented in Scandinavia and North America. Recently, the Warren Spring preliminary report has revealed a similar level of pollution in Scotland and parts of northern England.
