acetaldehyde

(ethanal) An intermediate in the conversion of pyruvic acid to eth-anol, the final stage of glycolysis under anaerobic conditions in plants. The conversion of acetaldehyde to carbon dioxide and ethanol is energy requiring, involving oxidation of a reduced molecule of NAD. Acetaldehyde is also involved in the synthesis and breakdown of the amino acid threonine.
