(slime bacteria) An order containing flexible creeping bacteria that lack a rigid cell wall and flagella, and move by gliding across the substrate. Most of its members are terrestrial. Myxobacters differ from other bacteria in producing resting cells, termed microcysts, that are often borne in fruiting bodies. Many are soil saprophytes, some species (e.g. of Cytophaga and Sporocytophaga) producing cellulase enzymes.
